Makayla Lovrak

I am a Portland-based designer who exhibits unique expressions of creativity, problem solving, and thought through a beautiful, analytical practice.

I’m most captivated by typography, typeface design, book and web design, UI/UX, as well as copywriting, project management, and art direction.

Inspired by the general anatomy of Apple Garamond, Sabon, and Hoefler Text, I created a display typeface that stands up to body well. As time went on, the typeface acquired unique characteristics and developed a personality of its own. I hope to see it being printed, used in books, on posters, on screen, and in experimental type compositions.

She's not perfect at all. She isn't kerned that well. There's still so many inconsistencies I see. But, she will always be my first typeface. She'll always remind of how far I've come and how far I will go. "You can make a typeface!" she taught me. And look. I did it.

March 2020            Typeface Design

Tasked with redesigning a restaurants website, I sought to digitally translate hospitable “old world charm,” create new intuitive content groupings, and establish better hierarchy to bring the sophistication and credibility Maurice already has as a business, online.

Margin (WIP)

Margin is an extension of my senior thesis exploring rest as a needed form of regenerative self maintenance in a world of pathological busyness. It is an application for someone who regularly overfills their schedule with work so that it’s easier to create space in their lives for rest and see it as productive. Through stages of informed research, I am synthesizing my findings in order to better serve people’s needs through thoughtful UI/UX.

Expected Completion: May 2020            Research, UI/UX

Annex Zine (Fall 2019)

Part experiment, part serious play, this edition of
the PSUGD Annex Zine served to dive deep into the concepts of space in both literal and metaphorical ways. An extensive interview with graphic designer and space junkie, Duane King, fuels the entirety of the zine, exploring themes around ethics, technology, and
the space between us.

Roles: art direction, copyediting, interview transcription, project management, and production (page layout, printing, and binding).
